  1. Andas in genom näsan.

Överkroppen och bebisen står still.

  1. Andas in och bygg trycket från övning 1.
  4. Byt sida.

  1. Andas in och bygg trycket i magen.
  2. Kliv bakåt med ena benet och sänk dig långsamt tills bakre knät nuddar golvet. Bromsa hela vägen ner.
  3. Stanna ett andetag på knä. Höften rak, bebisen nära.

Power ParentingThree exercises for you and your baby

Movement and breathing from the sessions at Fotografiska, adapted for your living room floor. Your baby is the weight. Your breath is the engine.

Supine breathing

A father lies on his back on a mat holding his baby while a mother sits beside him.
Your baby rests on your stomach and rides every breath.

This is where you find intra-abdominal pressure, the thing that carries the other two exercises. When the breath fills your whole trunk, your middle becomes strong and stable without you having to brace stiff.

StartLie on your back with knees bent and feet on the floor. Place your baby on your stomach and hold with both hands.

  1. Breathe in through your nose. Let the air fill your belly, your sides and your lower back, as if a belt around your waist expands in every direction. Your baby rises with the breath.
  2. Breathe out slowly through your mouth and keep a light firmness in your belly, roughly as if someone were about to poke it. Your ribs come down, your belly does not go soft.
  3. Keep your neck, jaw and shoulders relaxed. Firm belly, free breath.

How to know you have it

Put a hand on the side of your waist. Breathe in and feel your hand being pushed out, not just your belly rising. Take that pressure with you into exercises 2 and 3.

Rotation

Knee rotation with baby

A mother lies on her back with her legs up holding her baby above her chest.
Your upper body and baby stay still. Your legs do the work.

Mobility in your thoracic spine and control through your trunk. Your baby keeps the weight on your upper body while your legs move from side to side. The challenge is using your breath to bring yourself back.

StartLie on your back with hips and knees bent at right angles and your knees together in the air. Hold your baby above your chest.

  1. Breathe in and build the pressure from exercise 1.
  2. Lower your knees together to one side, as far as you can with both shoulder blades on the floor and your baby still.
  3. Breathe out and let the exhale and your belly pull your knees back to the middle.
  4. Switch sides. Stay connected to the pressure in your belly the whole time.

If your baby starts to sway, make the movement smaller.

Reverse lunge to knee

A mother kneels on one knee holding her baby against her body while a coach watches.
Control down to the floor, control back up.

A single leg exercise where the whole point is control, from standing down to the floor and back up. Carry your baby against your body or hold them in front of you.

StartStand with your feet hip width apart. Baby against your chest, or in front of you to make it heavier.

  1. Breathe in and build the pressure in your belly.
  2. Step back with one leg and lower yourself slowly until your back knee touches the floor. Brake all the way down.
  3. Pause for one breath on your knee. Hips square, baby close.
  4. Breathe out and press up through your front foot back to standing, as controlled as on the way down.

Slow beats fast. A folded blanket under your knee helps.

How to use it

Do the exercises in order, 1, 2 and 3, two to three times a week. The whole session takes about ten minutes. Always start with the breathing, it is the foundation for the rest.
